Below The Surface Of Flood Damage
Flood damage isn’t just like the images you’ve seen of people on their roofs after massive hurricanes, with the water covering everything in sight. Statistically, very few people will see damage on that scale. A much bigger percentage of us will see flood damage on a smaller scale so it’s a good idea to learn about it and what to expect.
For most of us, the worst flood damage we’ll ever see is a few inches of water in the basement, or the first floor if we don’t have a basement. When the water recedes, most of it disappears from the house, too, although you would normally have to do some clean-up. Once the water is gone, many think the flood damage is also gone but that’s often not the case.
Once your basement or home has had water in it, the hidden damage can frequently be the worst part of the flood. Water doesn’t just sit on the floor, waiting to be wiped up. It gets into every nook and cranny, as well as soaking into any porous surface. Not only does this effect any objects that get wet, like furniture, but this moisture wicks into the very walls. This hidden moisture can lead to mildew, mold and rot that can harm the structural integrity of the home, as well as contributing to poor air quality.
